Mentors and Proteges > The Biblical Basis for MentoringIt is very obvious, throughout the Bible, that God has a special place in his heart for children, especially the fatherless. As Christians we are all called to take care of the orphans and widows. This is what we focus on at Youth Horizons. We know that the only thing that can really heal the pain and brokenness that these children have is the love of Jesus Christ. God intended children to be raised up in a healthy family with a loving mother and father who teach and train them in God’s ways and through his love. The children we work with come from broken families. We believe the next best thing for them is to match them with a Christian mentor who is committed to loving them unconditionally over the long term. What the Bible Says About MentoringWhat the Bible Says about the FatherlessBiblical Examples of MentoringHave You Been Called to Be a Mentor? What the Bible Says About MentoringMatthew 22:37-38“Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 28:19-20“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our lives as well…” Isaiah 58:9-12“Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: ‘Here am I.’ If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always: He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.” Philippians 4:9“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me -- put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Proverbs 13:20“He who walks with the wise grows wise; but a companion of fools suffers harm.” Colossians 3:16“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” 1 Timothy 4:12“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” Titus 2:7-8“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.” What the Bible Says about the FatherlessJames 1:27“This is religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless, to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Psalms 68:5“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” Psalms 10:14“But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.” Hosea 14:3 b“We will never again say ’Our gods’ to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.” Psalms 10:17,18“You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.” Matthew 25:40 b“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Proverbs 22:6“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Biblical Examples of MentoringJesus / Disciples

Have You Been Called to Be a Mentor? It is important to know you have been “called” by God to be a mentor. God calls us to do many things in his Word. The Holy Spirit also speaks to us and urges us to do certain things. God gives some people a heart to help kids. We believe that all of our mentors were called to mentor. This is important because following through with the commitment is an issue of being faithful to God and his calling. This is much more significant than Youth Horizons asking someone to be committed to mentoring. The accountability of the relationship lies with God, not Youth Horizons. Examples of Calling :
